چکیده

Currently Metadata is used to locate information on the Internet. The Kendra project’s aim is to exploit metadata further by using it to drive the adaptation of Internet data distribution and delivery architectures. The central hypothesis is that metadata not only can increase retrieval effectiveness but also improve delivery performance and address its temporal characteristics. We are developing a distributed multi-media delivery system which utilises intelligent, distributed caching mechanisms to improve availability, performance and reliability while minimising storage space and network utilisation. In this paper we introduce a metadata reference model for multimedia entertainment data. We show how the model permits specification of metadata describing not only configurations of the delivery system tailored to the data being delivered, thus improving performance, but also adaptations, allowing the delivery system to respond to a degradation in its environment by reconfiguring itself. We illustrate our approach by describing an Internet audio-on-demand service.

Kendra: Adaptive Audio Delivery over the Internet

The growth in the use of networks for the real-time delivery of continuous media has focused much attention on QoS management techniques. Distributed continuous media applications often need to operate within strict resource requirements if an acceptable level of service is to be maintained, and therefore the need for QoS monitoring and adaptation arises. This paper presents the adaptive audio ...

Mobile Agent-Based Services for Real-Time Multimedia Content Delivery

Technologies and applications that enable multi-party, multimedia communications are becoming more and more pervasive in every facet of daily lives: from distance learning to remote job training, from peer-to-peer conferencing to distributed virtual meetings. To effectively use the evolving Internet infrastructure as ubiquitously accessible platform for the delivery of multi-faceted multimedia ...

Adaptive Reservation: A New Framework for Multimedia Adaptation

Research on multimedia adaptation usually assumes undifferentiated, best-effort service from the network, and relies on signaling mechanisms such as packet loss rates for feedback. These methods result in unfairness to adaptive applications in the presence of aggressive, non-adaptive applications. A network with enhancements for QoS support, and usage and QoS dependent pricing, can use pricing ...

Modeling Real-time Multimedia Streaming Using Hls Protocol

With the technology innovation in electronic devices, the rising demand for high-quality multimedia content will continually grow. Over the last years, there is a shift from the traditional approach of streaming the media content to the modern approach of adaptive bit-rate streaming, which offers the benefit of switching to the best quality video according to varying network conditions or avail...

Kendra: Internet Distribution & Delivery System

Kendra’s primary objective is to test the hypothesis that metadata can be used not only to increase searching effectiveness on the Internet, but also to determine optimisation parameters in internet data distribution and delivery systems. Specifically, we are developing a layered metadata reference model to describe multi-media entertainment data and the architectures supporting it. Further, we...
